Write as yourself not anyone else

In my little stay on earth, I’ve come to notice that many people are in the habit of imitating just everything they do. They imitate Mr. A’s dressing, imitate Mr. B’s walking, Mr. C’s talking and . . .

Such people never do anything of their own. They are the ones people from my country call, “copy-copy”. It is a pity because in a bid to imitate others people tend leave their own self desolate; their potentials languishing to death and their abilities never to see the light of the day. This is bad and as John Mason puts it:

“Imitation is limitation. Make your own impression”

It is even more pitiable to know that there are writers who are fond of imitating other writers. Such writers copy someone’s diction (choice of words), presentation and even formatting. I discovered this when I started reading blogs and books so widely these days. You’ll get to see two blogs with almost the same contents (same posts, same formatting and same pictures) so disgusting!

As a writer, copying other’s writing has lots of bad effects, these include:

  1. You will lose your writing voice;
  2. You will lose your message;
  3. Your writing will sound and look fake;
  4. Your writing will fail;
  5. You will lose readers who are potential customers;
  6. You will murder your creative nerves;
  7. You will lose your writer’s confidence;
  8. Your writing will not be inspiring, motivating or informative just dull;
  9. You won’t be practicing so you won’t develop;
  10. You will become nobody, nothing!

Conclusion

Writing with another writer’s voice is just like borrowing a shirt; you will never feel comfortable in it and people will look down on you for it. So why don’t you accept and develop your own writing voice and stop being an echo to another man’s voice

Now what?

Take fifteen minutes and write anything in the way you will say it. Don’t copy anyone just write as yourself. Tell us how the piece looks by leaving a comment.
