It’s allowed, Write awful first drafts

There is myth that parades most writers’ minds. It’s even more common among aspiring and amateur writers. This myth is that s/he must produce excellent work every time. That real writers always churn out awesome pieces.

Well this thought is farther away from the truth than the distance between the North and South poles.

In fact, all writers write not so good  or even awful first drafts. They only polish the piece before they become what you see and adore.

Ernest Hemingway says it better

The first draft of anything is shit

The way forward

Knowing this truth now, you should embrace your bad first drafts.

They are so important because they are the foundation upon which the beautiful piece is built.

They are the skeleton of your pieces and can you imagine a beautiful body without a back up structure? Yeah, that picture of the body falling apart is exactly the picture of a piece without a first draft.

All writers who know the importance of first drafts like them but are they all that rosy?

I wish I could say yes, but for a truth writing first drafts are hard.

Often times you’d need to fight off procrastination, self-doubt, insecurity, writers’ block among others.

While at it, you’d have to zero your mind and write. You should aim at getting your ideas down not having a polished piece.

One good technique to doing this is outlining. Outlines give your pieces focus and direction.

Ending Notes

It is not up for debate how important drafts are to production of awesome pieces. All that matters is to develop the discipline of sitting down and writing it out. Doing this often would help you develop and get better at it. You’d be more ready when you know the foe.

Remember, a draft is a good framework upon which to build your pieces.

Question: Do you write with drafts? What’s been your experience?

I completely agree with this – a draft is a good framework upon which to build your pieces.
And like you said, we writers often want a perfect first draft, moi inclusive.

Sometimes, my first draft is really horrible. at other times, it’s fair enough and really helps trigger my writing juices when next i visit the draft. At some other times though, i’ve had to completely discard the fresh draft and start a fresh one, lol.

Your suggestion on outlining key points is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
